Grandparenting Tips For Staying In Touch Across The Miles

When thinking about grandparenting tips for this situation, having an open mind and a good attitude is key

As I sat down to blog this morning, I had a horrible thought.

Yep, I sure did! 🙁 I was thinking…

“Wow, I CAN’T (even start to imagine) a long distance relationship with MY grandchildren!!” <3 <3 My two blessings live just (2) houses away from me. I can see their house clearly, and can easily walk to them.

My husband and I share a very close bond with our grands.

Being a grandparent has been an amazing experience! For both of us!

As I continued harboring over long distance grandparenting, I started to think of a few tips on communicating and staying in touch with little ones while miles away.

There are many things that can be done to make communicating easier…AND interesting!

However, let’s face it; there isn’t ANYTHING like giving your grandchild a physical, bear hug, is there? <3

Here Are My (6) Tips

Skype, Facetime, and Hangouts is usually the first thought when staying in touch across the miles. However, grandparents can make it fun and creative. 😉

1. A conversation game may be a good activity choice for ages 5 and up. With this one, there are many ideas to consider. For starters, a question game like… “What’s your favorite book?” Or, it could be colors, foods, cartoons, and so on. Reading stories is also another good option for toddlers. Of course, with younger children; it’s up to the grandma or grandpa to make it fun and exciting.

2. For older grandchildren, help with homework would be an awesome option. This would also, help take some of the load off of the parents. You can do a lot while on Skype, Facetime, and Hangouts.

3. Playing games online is great for learning. Games like, Hangman, Chess, and Scrabble are good for starters. With today’s technology, the options are endless. Monopoly is another choice. For some children, these could be a tad boring. However, as I shared above; it’s the grandparent’s duty to make it fun. 😉

4. Telephone and mail are both imperative when keeping in touch with your grand young ones. Grandparents can schedule phone calls…maybe once or twice per week. Care packages could be fun for mailing. There could be care packages for illness, first day of school, activities for long summer days, holidays, gifts for first communion and confirmation, and finally birthdays.

5. Schedule 3 or 4 visits throughout the year… Or, however many your finances will allow. With long distance relationships, more is always better. With special holidays, graduations, and birthdays, planning a trip is obvious for most grandparents and grandchildren. A planned, (long trip) could also be an option. Of course, this is something that would have to be agreed upon by all family members.

6. Online apps can be a great help with communicating with your grands. The Instagram app is excellent for sharing photos. Adding captions is a lot of fun on Instagram. The Whats App is always a good choice for keeping in touch. It’s a good idea for instant messaging and also, another good photo-sharing app. If you have Wifi, sending instant messages shouldn’t be a problem.

There are also some good music apps to share music interests. Although, grandparents and grandchildren may have different views on music. — LOL — Often times that is the case. However, putting various views on music aside, there are (2) awesome apps for music that come to mind.

Both Spotify and Pandora are excellent. Also, they both have free versions. The free versions are customizable, but with a few ads mixed in. You can listen ad-free for a small fee.

Important Note:I understand that when considering all the above tips for long distance relationships, of course, all parties must agree.

The most important thing of all is to keep all communication open and stay in touch with your grandchildren. <3 <3

Should You Clean or Declutter Your Grandchildren’s Rooms?

Deep Cleaning Cleaning and decluttering is all fine and good, however, when it comes to your grandkid’s things, you need to be aware of any boundaries set.

Boundaries set by your kids needs to be followed and respected.

For some grandparents…that may be a big issue

Some grandparents have a (natural) habit of cleaning and decluttering. Could it be that most grandmothers have this trait in their character? There are many Grandmas that have this natural need to clean and organize; even in their children’s rooms.

However, this could easily turn into a heated debate fast and furious!

Some people have a huge issue with their parents who just straighten up, or perhaps, take out the trash. I say, that’s going a tad bit too far in my book. However, there again; there are boundaries. 😉

This could be a major disaster if you have two children sharing a room…especially if the older child is up in their teen years. It’s natural for (some teenagers) to have a certain feeling and obsession about “their stuff,” and to be quite vocal about it!

So…what does this mean for grandparents that have an over-powering urge to clean and tidy up?

Below are (6) things to consider for grandparents that have an oever bearing need to clean, tidy up, or declutter.

1.

Know and respect boundaries

2.

Keep the lines of communication open at all times with your kids

3.

Always listen to what your grandkids have to say; regardless

4.

Always clean up (after yourself) with any messes made in the house (by you). There are those that don’t bother 🙁

5.

Try to encourage your grandkids to clean up after themselves; especially in their own bedrooms. Your kids will begin to notice the tidyness 🙂

6.

If you’re an old fashioned grandma, always refrain from your need to organize, pick up scattered clothes, and even doing laundry

According to your kids, you are there for one purpose. That is to love, nurture, and take care of everything that pertains to your grandkids; period!

I know that’s blunt, however, things have changed since back in the day when (most things) were accepted and grandparents had a say in how their grandkids should be raised and taught.

The 5 Greatest Technological Advancements of the 21st Century For Grandmothers and Others

The power of various technology advancements has significantly impacted  today’s society  in regards to  the vast array of its businesses, learning capabilities, government and employment.

However, while thinking of the 5 greatest technological advancements, Microsoft, and medical advancements comes to mind. You often wonder, how did moms and grandmothers survive before all the modernized washing machines, coffee makers and dishwashers? People from the 20th century were definitely physically fit, compared to today.

Below are 5 of the Greatest Technological Advancements

Computerized World – Today, thinking back when everything was done by pen and paper just boggles the human mind. The first personal home computers hit the market in the late 1970s. Shortly thereafter, Gates and Paul Allen started a business relationship and that’s when the company “Microsoft” was born. Then came Microsoft Windows on November 20, 1985. And the world has not been the same since. Today, it’s unthinkable (for most of the United States population) to go without a laptop and the genius invention of the Ipad. And now we have computerized cars, sewing machines, cash registers, vacuum cleaners and more. What a wonderful world with this being the greatest technological advancement.

Medical Tech – Many stories have been told about how moms had babies at home and then went straight to work afterwards. I’ve heard my grandmother on my husband’s side tell quite a few stories about having babies at home. That’s quite remarkable from the 21st Century perspective. Today, there are ultrasounds to find out the sex of a baby and computerized imaging to diagnose cancer; not to mention advancements on chemotherapy side effects. You can now have treatment for cancer with less nausea and vomiting. That in itself means a lot to a cancer victim. However, and more importantly, the advancements of actually saving a person’s life is at the top of the list with vaccinations and surgical transplants.

Telephone – It is noted that the first telephone was invented in March 1876. Of course before that time, communication was performed by postal mail and railroad. A typical teenager would get mighty frustrated with this means of communication. However with the phone being among the 5 greatest technological advancements, came the first cellular phone in the late 1940s. Back then those cell phones were significantly larger than the ones today. Today there are cell phones equipped with text messaging, Internet and more that conveniently fits in the palm of your hand or attaches to the top of your jeans.

Transportation – Technological advancements have certainly come a long way concerning transportation. Back in the 17th century the horse and buggy type transportation was updated with better engineering for safer and more comfortable riding. Henry Ford acquired the merit for the first automobile for mass production. That first automobile was the “Model T“ back in 1908. It is known that the first railroad transportation was invented by George Stephenson. This train was operated with coal; while today, trains operate with solar power. Automobiles are now equipped with many extras. You are fortunate if you can afford such a car with heated seats, GPS, DVD player, Bluetooth and keyless start.

Environment – The environmental improvement is dependent on many things. Health safety practices play a huge role with improving the environment. The public health department also needs to work hard to keep the environment clean. Automobile pollution has a lot to do with the health of the environment as well. A considerable amount of effort has went into doing just that in the last decade. One of the most important and smartest inventions was the catalytic converter in regards to automobile pollution. The invention of Earth Day brought about vast improvement with the environment and efforts to preserve natural resources.

Both education and employment is going to help further advance technology in the real world. Some people has said that technology has made the world as we know it, a lazy one. However, technological advancements are what made a success out of today’s doctors, lawyers, bankers and the list goes on and on.
