Your Hubby comes home from work and the second he gets inside the door, a routine question spills out of his mouth…

What’s For Supper?

Hmmm, I don’t know about you, but (sometimes, not ALL the time), I resent that simple question! Why???

Well, I don’t have children at home with me anymore, however, I get up at 5AM and workout, then…head straight to my home office and get to work. I work through the day until about 4 or 5PM.

Let me just say, I’m dragging and just plain tuckered, most of the time!!! :/ Now of course, my workload is not heavy labored, and I have a “soft and cushiony work from home job“…LOL!

Keep in mind (with the work I do online), I often get stressed out from my daily workload. Maybe I have an easy “J O B,” however, (not so easy sometimes), I’m tired just the same!

I often deal with important business decisions, transactions, refunds, dealing with my customers, and always striving to keep them happy…for the most part! It’s NOT always easy, like a lot of people seem to think. 😉

I dearly love my Hubby and would not know what I would do without him that’s for sure!! However, when he comes home from his job…his duties/jobs are done for the day.

* Let’s look at what I have to do before retiring for the night…

Clean up
I’m often doing laundry
I’m often paying bills
I often need to do grocery shopping

I also have to check my online workload before going to bed, so with that said; sometimes I’m up rather late trying to respond to my important clients and advertisers.

So, see how this can become resentful sometimes? Mind you…it’s not all the time that I feel this way. LOL Just those extremely tired and stressful days that the specific question of “What’s for Dinner?” can get to me. Again, love my Hubby LOTS! Just sayin… 😉

Does any of this strike a cord or ring a bell for any of you?

I know for some work at home moms or wives, their husbands help with daily chores and even with the cooking. If you are “in this category,” you are truly fortunate! Having said that, my Hubby DOES do some grilling on the weekends sometimes, and for that, I’m THANKFUL!

Geeze, I even feel a little guilty for my feelings …sometimes.

The above is from the WIFE part of me…I’ll just skip MOTHER and go straight to GRANDMOTHER.— Only because I have the greatest son and daughter-in-law who loves me unconditionally! 🙂

Grandparenting Tips and Duties

Now grandparenting could betaken for granted as well. I’m sure many grandmothers out there feel this way from time to time, do they not?

For Me…, I’m always ready and willing to babysit my grands…unless I’m unusually tired, (and that is sometimes the case), have to tend to my father, or just go see him, (that is once a week), or I’m just stressed out big time for any given reason. I love my grandkids and love spending time with them. However, I also appreciate my kids taking turns with both grandmas. 😉

The bottom line on Grandparenting…

I look at it this way…I want my grands to remember me when I’m old and (I) can’t remember them, OR…after I’m gone! That’s my major concern.

Will they remember me through all the tears and laughter?? I am working on that one, and I certainly HOPE SO!

So, you see? That’s why I’m usually eager to say “YES” to my grands!!

YES, I go through those “taking for granted” days, and also my “menopause” BOO-HOO days, however, it just boils down to…

Let me just say, and make very clear; I am so very fortunate to have the family that I have. I’m a lucky woman and Grandma, and always thankful for family and their unconditional love they show every day!

The Legacy of Grandmothers

I was very fortunate to know my great-grandmother up until I was twelve years old. The memories I have of her are scattered but everything I remember is consistent in that she was a strong and faithful woman. From her belief in our Lord, her work ethics, and the way she cared for those around her my memories attest to her character. As I became an adult I would continue to see the faithfulness and love of my Great-Grandma Susie from the stories that those that loved her would tell me.

I remember as a child going to her home once or twice a week with momma. We would spend a few hours there and while we were there it was as if we had taken a trip into the past. This was in fact in the sixties so when I talk about the past I mean the long past. She was born in eighteen hundred and eighty two. Her house smelled of cinnamon apples which she often cooked up for us when we came over. Her kitchen table was one of those aluminum legged, hard white top tables from perhaps the forties and the chairs were the shiny, plastic covered padded type that made little bare legs stick when you sat too long.


Her house was small and well kept. She had a bird in a cage on her small back porch which my oldest brother would torment. She was tall and always wore homemade aprons with huge pockets and always had a hankie peeking out. My height only came up to her waist and I recall so much more about her aprons and her hands than the etchings of her face. She was stern but you knew how much she loved you. She had a pump sewing machine which was used a great deal because she made most of what she wore, along with things for others including quilts. I also recall a large picture of Jesus on her wall and another of an angel watching over some children.

When we would visit I would carry my dolls with me. When I came into the house with a doll at some point during our visit she would take me to the sewing machine and pull out a swatch of some kind of pretty material. She would then sit down and make me a new dress for my dolly. I was always fascinated when she did this, I was young and it was amazing to watch. When I got much older it was even more amazing to me since I am anything but a seamstress. How someone could do this with just a glance and no pattern is outstanding. The dress always fit dolly perfectly.

She let megive her sewing machine a try but when my brothers began to play with the pump mechanism our sewing time was over. She had jars full of buttons and I loved looking at them and sometimes I would string them up for a necklace. I could play with the buttons and my dollies for many hours, but not the boys.

When my brothers would start to get bored and began to aggravate her bird she never said a word. She lovingly went to the kitchen and started to peel an apple or get out the bread and butter to make a piece of buttered bread with sugar. Sometimes it was a piece of lettuce with sugar or a raw potato with salt. She would make something for each of us and say, “Now, go out on the back porch and eat this.” We would willingly go and begin to play in the back yard.

Out in the yard was what I believe now to be a single car garage separate from the small house. But grandma had turned it into a small apartment to earn extra money. She was very resourceful and frugal; she had to be. She was alone when I knew her and taking care of herself. She was in her seventies when I met her. She had my grandmother later in life because she tried having children for a long time and was not able. They finally decided to adopt a boy and within a few months found out she was pregnant with my grandmother.

The first occupant of the little apartment behind the house I believe was a cousin of my grandma. She was a very unpleasant woman with a wart on her nose and a pointy chin and we truthfully thought she was a witch. Even though mom assured us she was not a witch her behavior told us different and we knew mom had been deceived by this woman! The second occupant was also a relative I believe but a much sweeter woman. She would invite me in and tell me stories and talk to me about my dolls. I loved spending time with my great-grandma and with this lady.

From the stories I have heard from my grandmother (my great-grandma Susie’s daughter) and my mom her life went something like this. Her mother died when she was fourteen and she had a younger sister by the name of ArizonaTerritory. From the stories passed down it seems they were passing through ArizonaTerritory on a covered wagon when she was born, thus the name. We called her Aunt Zoni and she told the most amazing stories. Anyway, Grandma Susie, at fourteen years old, was sent to live with another family and help them with work around the house because her dad could not take care of both of them after the death of her mother. Essentially she was earning her food and board by working for these people.

At one point she started working for Burlington which at the time made overalls and jeans. They had huge sewing machines and needles strong enough to go through thick denim. I can only imagine how strong you had to be in your upper arms to sew jeans eight plus hours a day. The stories go that she ran one of those needles through her finger at some point. *Shudder* As you can see she was accustomed to hard work. At some point she married and got some help but in her later years was again alone and depending on the Lord and His gift of resourcefulness.

My grandma and her three children went to live in great-grandma’s small home for many years when they found themselves homeless because my granddad’s alcoholism had taken over his life. Mom said that great-grandma made it all work in her small home and they always felt safe and were well fed. My mom tells me how great-grandma would heat up bricks, wrap them, and put them at their feet for warmth in the winter because they depended on one wood stove for heating.

In the summer there was one large fan in the window for cooling the house. Mom and I were just talking about this yesterday because it was so hot. I was wondering how they used to do it. Of course she lived in Kansas and not Texas but it was still hot in the summers. I asked Mom how they slept in that heat. She said they would go to bed and lay there until about eleven or eleven thirty before they could sleep; by then it had gotten a little cooler. I can not even imagine.

My own grandma was born in nineteen hundred and fifteen and she was a hard working woman just like great-grandma. Sometime during WWII grandma began working in a factory. It was the Sunshine Biscuit Factory and she was on the cracker assembly lines. They did not have a car so the bus was taken everywhere. Even my own mother, before they went to live with great-grandma, was boarding the bus with bags of laundry to get the clothes washed while grandma was off at the factory.

There are three generations of very strong women in my life that have passed down their strengths and their love for God to me. I am so thankful for these women in my life and the stories from the past that make us who we are. I am doing my best to pass these beliefs, strengths, and stories on to my children. My own daughter was blessed to have known her great-grandma Naomi until she was twelve, my son was only five but he remembers so many things about her. And now they are blessed to have their grandma Darlene, my mother, living with us. My daughter is twenty-eight and my son is twenty-one and she is a huge part of their lives at seventy-seven years old. What a blessing to have this legacy of love passed down through all these years!

However, problems like arthritis and recurring injuries make it difficult to jog, play sports, or participate in other activities that have a repetitive, pounding action on your joints. Water Aerobics: Exercises in the water are perfect for grandmas because the water holds a lot of your body weight, taking the stress off of your feet and joints. Plus, water provides the perfect resistance for a wide range of cardiovascular and toning exercises. If swimming laps isn’t your thing, try a water aerobics class instead. An instructor will lead you through a long series of activities to build strength and endurance, and classes are the perfect place to chat with other grandmas while you exercise. Many gyms even have classes designed specifically for people with arthritis or other joint issues.

Yoga and Pilates: Maintaining your flexibility is important for being able to participate in a wide range of activities, so you should incorporate some stretching into your exercise routine. Pilates classes are the perfect way to participate in active, gentle stretching that also works to strengthen your core muscles. Yoga is also an option, although you’ll need to have good balance to get the most out of it. Start with a beginner class and work your way up as you build balance and strength.

Rowing and Kayaking: If you’re lucky enough to live near the water, you can actually head out in a canoe or kayak to get some exercise while enjoying the fresh air. Canoes are also perfect for heading out with your honey for a romantic ride on the lake. Alternately, just use an indoor rowing machine, which includes not only the pulling motion to strengthen your arms and back, but also a leg component.

Any type of cardiovascular exercise can help ward off heart disease, losing a bit of weight may help fight diabetes, and developing strength can help you stay active for many years to come. The Recipe I Used

Carrot and Pear Puree (6 months and up)

Ingredients

3 medium carrots, peeled and cut into 1/4-inch
1 small pear, peeled and cut into 1/4 inch dice

Method

Place carrots and pears in machine and steam for 15 minutes
Puree to smooth (45 seconds)

(Optional Flavorings)

Stir in: A few drops of fresh ginger juice.
Stir in: Water, breast milk or formula.

Half a Dozen Important Things I’ve Learned As A New Grandma

 

 

 

 

Grandparenting duties are a blessing to me. I know there is a little handsome and smart boy who needs my help with raising, disciplining, and YES, loving him!! It’s an honor having the title of Grandparent. However, I’ve learned so very much from being one. I would love to share them with you all 🙂

 

However, first I want to say that all Grandmothers deserve a medal of honor! 😉 lol

 

Below are 6 things I’ve learned about being a Grandmother

1. Bite that tongue – I’ve been doing a lot of this! As I’m sure a large portion of Grandparents do this. It’s only nature that most Grandparents would like to continue with what they knew per se, 25 to 30 years in the past.

You will find out rather quickly that you want to blurt out various things to your grandchildren and your kids while enjoying and disciplining your Grands. And I’m not talking about bad things; I’m talking about all those old fashioned rules and ideas that us Grandmas still hold dear to our hearts! Times sure have changed! 😉

2. Certain expectations fall by the wayside – You are in for many, many surprises being a Grandma. What you expect to happen doesn’t AND what you don’t expect DOES happen! lol And everything in between. Boy was I wrong with what I had in mind after my first grandbaby arrived. All children start to develop their little personalities in the womb. While some challenging behavior can be corrected once your grandchild is 1 1/2 years old to 2 years. However, remember that most of their personality is forming before they are born.

I also expected to be able to do my online work while watching my grandson full time. Didn’t happen! I even had the cradle that my Dad made for my son in my office. Didn’t happen! My little guy constantly wanted to be entertained. I ended up watching him for approximately 6 months and then Mom gave up her job and talked my son into letting her stay home full time. My Daughter-In-Law wanted to stay home with him from day one!

Just a warning, if you’re reading this article, and you are in the same boat I was in, be prepared.


3. It’s much easier to babysit your grandchildren at their homes – Wow this is for sure 100% true! Well, think about it; your grandkids have all their toys, bed, favorite foods etc at their home. To disrupt that, it may rock the boat somewhat when it comes to their behavior. They also sleep much better when at home. I have learned this many times over! Some kids just don’t sleep good when away from home. However, some do. Every child is different.

4. Patience is still a definite virtue – My mother was the most patient person I’ve ever known. She always spent time with me when I needed her. Practicing patience is something that should be on all parent’s wanna-be list. It should be your number one priority. Children didn’t come with convenient and simple instructions. Life is not that simple. As new parents; you will need to spend time with your kids and bond with them. Spend quality time with them and teach the same things that were taught to you…only give your kids a lot more indepth teachings along with long-suffering patience. Your children will appreciate and remember this!

Well, you know that all that holds true for grandmothers. When your Grands are screaming “Mamma and Dadda!” You need to be patient with them; as with any other behavior.

5. Never forget that your grandchildren ARE NOT actually your children – That may be challenging for some grandparents to read or hear. Well, in a way they are. However, us Grandparents don’t have the final say about various rules, discipline, religion, and so many other things. We need to sit back and let Mom and Dad do their own thing. Although whatever the situation; some grandparents create their own recipes for disaster and step in too far. I DON’T want to be that type of Grandma! My kids are quite intelligent adults, and our grandkids will be nothing short of smart, compassionate and responsible adults.

6. Being Grandma isn’t always easy – Grandma, you’re in for a wild ride with your new role! You will get your feelings hurt more times that you can count. This is especially true when they get to the age where they know that Mom and Dad is indeed their Mom and Dad. And they know it when they leave. Grandma, are you able to calm your little one and soothe the hurt? Sometimes you can and sometimes you can’t. This is what I’ve learned myself. I sure wish I had a dollar everytime I’ve heard, (through real crocodile tears) “Where Mamma and Dadda at??” 🙁

When I first became a grandmother, I daydreamed about my little guy sleeping peacefully in his crib that we have in our home. Well, that sure didn’t happen. Maybe a couple of times. However, most of the time, he ended up sleeping with both Amma and Pappa. Don’t you just love the “Amma?” =) lol

Another thing that I was looking forward to was taking my grandson to various places…out to eat, or to the grocery store. Guess what!? That has yet to happen. Us Grandparents have NOT taken him anywhere by ourselves yet.

Through all the crying and sleepless nights, I’m proud to say that becoming Grandma is still the best experience I’ve had throughout my life. 🙂

Look and Feel Your Best at Any Age – Grandmothers Included Guest Post

 

 

 

There’s a saying that age is just a number, and now, perhaps more than ever, it’s especially true. Don’t be tied to preconceived notions about how people your age should look or act. Take steps to look and feel your best, regardless of how many birthdays you have had!

1. Be active

 

 

 

Incorporating physical activity into your usual routine is a great way to maintain your weight and keep you looking your best. Plus, it also helps ward off many health concerns, from heart disease to diabetes. The Center for Disease Control recommends adults get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise. In addition, two sessions of strength training help tone and develop muscles. Try joining or starting a running or walking club with others in your neighborhood if you’re having a hard time finding the motivation to get started.


2. Enhance your look

If you feel like your youthful appearance is disappearing, there are plenty of ways to preserve it and keep yourself looking as good as you feel. A non-invasive procedure like an eyelift can make a huge difference and give you a confidence boost. In addition, consider revamping your wardrobe. Although you won’t be turning to today’s teen fashions to make yourself look younger, you can find stylish clothing that is flattering and age-appropriate.

3. Eat well

The foods you eat have a big impact on both how you look and how you feel. Eating a healthy diet helps you manage your weight. Keeping your diet free from foods that sap your energy helps you feel ready to tackle anything. A healthy diet should include plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains, but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Try a new recipe, like a quinoa salad or a Turkish red lentil soup.

4. Manage stress

Feelings of stress can spill over into the rest of your life. Instead of dwelling on things that cause you stress, find outlets to let you relieve that tension. Look for local coupons that let you try out a new yoga studio or pottery class. If you’re more of an introvert, find some instrumental music you like and play it while you sit quietly and meditate for at least 10 minutes each day. Learning stillness can help you focus your attention and remember that stressful situations in your life aren’t going to take over.

5. Maintain a positive attitude

Having a negative attitude about yourself is sure to spill over into how you carry yourself and how you feel on a daily basis. Find friends who make you feel positive and who focus on the good things in life rather than the bad to help support your own positive outlook. You don’t have to be that perfect person your mother may have led you to believe you needed to be. Embrace who you are and enjoy the life you have.

Developing healthy patterns in your daily routines has a huge impact on how you look and feel. Say no to complacency and get out there to make the most of every day, week, month and year, regardless of your age. You might just feel like you turned back the clock a few years.
