Helpful Tips for Staying In Touch With Grandparents

Back in February, I wrote a post talking about tips for staying in touch with grandchildren who live far away. It’s often difficult and sad to not be with family all the time.

Now, I’ve decided to write about some of the best ways to stay in touch with us! The grandparents!

Tip 1: A Phone Call

There’s nothing better than hearing a familiar voice on the phone after a while of not hearing that voice. In this day and age, it’s often hard to grab someone’s attention long enough to talk on the phone. Never underestimate the power of a “how are you?”/check-in phone call. We want to know what’s going on in your life if you’re eating your veggies, and doing your homework.

It goes a long way in our hearts!


Tip 2: Send Flowers

A flower delivery not only makes your grandparents smile, but it also improves our mental health. A recent Rutgers Behavioral Study found that flowers have an immediate impact on happiness. All study participants expressed “true” or “excited” smiles upon receiving flowers, demonstrating extraordinary delight and gratitude.

In fact, 81% of seniors who participated reported a reduction in depression after receiving flowers. =)

Even the colors of flowers can affect our moods! Red is an energy booster, purple is a sleep-aid and stress reliever, while green enhances relaxation.

All could be very beneficial to older people who might be experiencing fatigue and stress.

Next time you’re looking for a gift to give your grandparents or are just looking to send them something, flower delivery are a great idea. 😉

Tip 3: Handmade Card

If there’s one thing grandparents love, it’s handmade items.

It shows you took the time out of your busy day to make something just for us. It makes us feel special and even closer to you, especially from the little ones!

Feel free to send cute drawings, handmade cards, or even just pictures stuffed into a card. All are so fun to receive, and we can hang them up on the fridge so that we can see them every day.

It’s easy to get caught up in your own world and forget about family members you don’t see as often anymore. We understand! But even the little things can make such a big difference to us. Keep that in mind!

For Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month: Learning to Cope with a Mesothelioma Diagnosis as a Parent/Grandparent

Finding out you’ve been diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma, or peritoneal mesothelioma can come as a shock at any stage of life, but especially when you’re a parent or grandparent.

You probably want nothing more than the reassurance that you’re going to be there to care for and interact with the precious children in your life for years to come. It’s important to consider the emotional trauma that can result from your mesothelioma diagnosis. Taking steps to deal with your apprehensions and fears is a vital aspect of your treatment.

Your Emotional State Can Impact Your Overall Well-Being

The physical side effects of mesothelioma can actually be exacerbated when you ignore your emotional state. But if you find effective outlets for common feelings associated with a diagnosis, you may enhance your lifestyle. There are a number of different options you could try to process your emotions in a healthy way.


Develop a Support Network

Finding a local support group or getting involved in one-on-one therapy sessions with a counselor who’s experienced at helping cancer patients cope could prove highly beneficial for you. There is strength in numbers.

Talking to a group of other cancer patients who can sympathize with your feelings is often a huge relief.

Hearing ways they were able to effectively cope with their diagnosis can be empowering. Honestly expressing your frustrations and fears in a non-threatening, accepting environment can provide a much-needed release of pent-up emotions.

Consider Encouraging Loved Ones to Seek Support

If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, your family and friends will undoubtedly be facing emotional battles of their own. You can let them know that you’re in favor of them joining a support group for loved ones of cancer patients if they feel led to do so.

Your children, grandchildren, spouse, or other family members probably want to stay as positive and strong around you as possible, so they may suppress many of their negative emotions.

But it’s normal for them to feel overwhelmed during this difficult time as well. Finding others who are experiencing or have experienced similar circumstances can be a big morale booster for them.

Learning to Live One Day at a Time

One of the biggest struggles those diagnosed with mesothelioma often face is uncertainty. You may be uncertain about your treatment options, the symptoms of your condition, your prospects for the future, and the toll it’s all going to take on your family. You may not feel like you have the time or energy to be the kind of parent or grandparent you want to be. These feelings are completely normal.

Learning to take life one day at a time, be good to yourself, and not feel guilty for anything beyond your control can help both you and your family to cope.

If you or a loved one are suffering from a chronic illness with a high mortality rate, remember your biggest challenge is always you. Keeping some of the above in mind is by no means an all-encompassing solution to coping, but it could be a good start.

For the month of March and in honor of Colorectal Awareness Month, please say a prayer for those living and/or affected by mesothelioma related cancers. <3

In our family, I always remember the warm fuzzy feeling I got whenever we (all) sat down to a meal…(usually dinner time). =) <3

Thanksgiving Leftovers and What to Do with Them

Hooray for Thanksgiving! The best day of the year to eat. And sometimes after Thanksgiving we still eat, and eat, and eat… By about day 4 or 5 of Thanksgiving leftovers, we are ready for something new. Here are some fun ideas to creatively use up those Thanksgiving leftovers.

Turkey – Turkey is probably the easiest leftover to use. Turkey meat can be used in soups, casseroles, pot pies, salads, and even tacos. Or you can try my delicious and super easy Barbeque Turkey Sandwiches (recipe at the end). 😉

Cranberry Sauce – Cranberry sauce is one of my favorite Thanksgiving leftovers. I love to spread cranberry sauce on deli meat sandwiches; especially with a little cream cheese. You can also add cranberry sauce to yogurt, oatmeal, smoothies, or even as a topping for vanilla ice cream. A little cranberry sauce added to homemade whipped cream can make a fun, festive topping for hot cocoa, cider, pie, etc.


Mashed Potatoes – Shepherd’s Pie, anyone? That is the first thing I get excited to make with leftover mashed potatoes. Mashed potatoes make a yummy topping on meatloaf as well as other casseroles. There are many bread, roll, doughnut, and other pastry recipes that use mashed potatoes. In my Internet searching, I came across several recipes for potato dumplings that looked intriguing and yummy.

Sweet Potatoes – Like mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes can be added to many bread and pastry recipes. You can make sweet potato pancakes by mixing an egg or two with some leftover, mashed sweet potatoes and then frying them on the gridle. Sweet potatoes can be added to thicken chilis or stews. Sweet potatoes can also be used in burritos, quesadillas, and other Mexican-inspired dishes.

Stuffing – Stuffing is, in my opinion, the most difficult leftover to work with. But believe it or not, there are some great recipes and ideas for using up stuffing too. Apparently, stuffing can be used to stuff more than just birds. You can make stuffing-stuffed peppers, mushrooms, and meatballs. Stuffing can be turned into breakfast foods like breakfast hash and stuffing baked eggs. Stuffing also can be delicious on top of some casseroles and dishes like chicken cordon bleu.

I am now looking forward to using my Thanksgiving leftovers this year! How about you? What else do you do with Thanksgiving leftovers?

As Promised…

“Leftover” BBQ Turkey Sandwiches (Yields 4 Sandwiches)

Ingredients

1-2 lb of leftover turkey meat
12 oz of barbeque sauce
4 hoagie sandwich rolls
4 slices of provolone cheese
4 slices of turkey bacon, cooked
1 avocado, sliced
Small red onion, sliced

Directions

Mix turkey leftovers with barbeque sauce in a pan on the stove. Heat over medium heat until the turkey is warmed through. While turkey is heating, turn on the oven broiler to high. Place the hoagie sandwich rolls, open-faced, on a baking sheet. Put a slice of cheese on each roll. Put the rolls in the broiler for 2-3 minutes until toasted… (Make sure you check the rolls regularly to prevent them from burning). Put some of the barbequed turkey mixture on each roll. Top with a slice of turkey bacon, avocado and red onion slices. Eat and enjoy!

Turkey Salad with Strawberry-Pepper Vinaigrette

Serves: 4

Ingredients

6 cups torn romaine
2 cups torn curly endive, chicory, or escarole
2 1/2 cups (12 oz) cooked turkey or chicken, julienne
2 cups kiwifruit, peeled, sliced (or star fruit)
1 1/2 cups (3 oz) enoki mushrooms
1 cup red cherry tomatoes and/or yellow baby pear tomatoes, halved

Strawberry-Pepper Vinaigrette

1 cup strawberries, fresh or frozen (thawed), cut-up
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
1/8 teaspoon cracked black pepper

Directions

Mix lettuce and greens together and divide among four plates. Top each pile with turkey strips, kiwi, mushrooms, and tomatoes. In a blender container or food processor bowl, combine ingredients for vinaigrette. Cover and blend or process until smooth. Drizzle vinaigrette over salad and pass around a fresh pepper grinder for a garnish.

Pumpkin Cheesecake

Serving size: 12 == Calories per serving: 255

Ingredients

12 Oreo cookies
1 1/2 cups pumpkin puree
3 eggs
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 pinch cloves
3 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese
1 tablespoon cornstarch

Directions

Put one Oreo into each cupcake slot in a lined cupcake pan. Mix remaining ingredients together with an electric mixer. Pour over crust. Bake 35-40 minutes at 350°. Cool completely at room temperature, then refrigerate overnight.

Dinner in a Pumpkin

Serving size: 5 == Calories per serving: 301

Ingredients

1 sugar pumpkin
1 small onion, diced
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
Salt & Pepper to taste
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup mushrooms
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 (10 3/4-ounce) can cream of chicken soup
1/2 cup sour cream
1 1/2 cups white rice (uncooked)

Directions

Cut a hole in the top of the pumpkin and clean it out. Put rice and water in a microwave safe dish and cook on high until rice is tender (or use a rice cooker).

Brown ground beef in a large frying pan and add onions to saute.

When ground beef is no longer pink, add the rest of the ingredients and stir until completely mixed. Mix ground beef mixture and rice together and pour into pumpkin. Put the top back on the pumpkin and bake at 350° for 1 hour.

Be sure to scoop out part of pumpkin when serving.

Turkey Soup

Ingredients

1 turkey carcass
12 cubes chicken bouillon
5 large potatoes, cubed
1 onion, chopped
1 stalk celery, diced
6 cups carrots
2 15-ounce cans corn
2 14 1/2-ounce cans stewed tomatoes
2 cups elbow macaroni
Salt & pepper as needed

Directions

1. Fill a stock pot half to three quarters full of water and boil it.
2. Add bouillon cubes and the turkey carcass and let it boil for about 45 minutes to an hour.
3. While the carcass is boiling, chop up the rest of the vegetables.
4. Use a slotted spoon to remove the turkey bones from the boiling water.
5. Add all the vegetables and while they’re cooking, remove the meat from the turkey carcass.
6. Chop the turkey meat into bite sized chunks and add to stock pot.
7. When vegetables are nearly ready, add the elbow macaroni.
8. Season well with salt and pepper (it takes a lot of salt!).
9. Enjoy!

Note: Add more water as needed until the consistency is the way you prefer it.

Turkey Marinade

Ingredients

1 cup soy sauce
1 cup vegetable oil
2 cups sprite
1 1/2 tablespoons garlic, crushed
1 1/2 tablespoons horseradish

Directions

Mix and add up to 5 pounds cubed turkey breast–marinate overnight and grill.

Sharing a Nice Find Today – Coping With the Death of Your Pet

Anyone that knows me well knows how I adore animals. While growing up, I always remember having dogs. Three I can remember well, however, I think there were more. I also, remember having a tiny grey kitten.

My parents made me get rid of it only due to the fact that I didn’t know how to properly care for a cat. 🙁

 

 

After I married, I have had many cats. I’ve had four, and currently have a tuxedo cat.

He IS precious and always LOVES to be in my lap. He is the most loving cat that I’ve ever known or had.

We had to put down the cat we had previously, (Jesse) back in October of 2015. <3

My heart was broken in a million pieces. It’s so very sad to lose a pet that you’ve loved and had in your home for many years. For many people, pets are their children, just as their human children, and are “family members.”


Small children don’t understand why pets have to pass away, and are truly affected and -saddened beyond measure when they lose their pets, also known as their best friends, and childhood companions.

I opened my emails today and found a nice article about coping with a death of a pet. I thought I’d share it with you.

* Make for sure your child’s emergency contact info is correct. I think this one should be on top of the list for sure. 😉

* Updated Shots – This is essential and must be high up on the list of priorities…always! When your child is in a school environment, there are all types of germs floating around. These shots are just a logical way to help prevent illnesses and diseases.

* Eye Site – Regular eye exams are important to your child’s schooling, and also, home life.

* Teeth and Gums – If you want to keep your child healthy and infection-free, it’s a good idea to make them brush and floss daily. A nice smile is an awesome thing to have too! =)


* Make sure the nurse is aware of your child’s allergies and medications they are taking. Good Golly Miss Molly, this is important; much needless to say! 😮 lol

* Get enough sleep – When I was a young child, I remember going to bed every (school night) at 8:00 – 8:30. What’s the best time for the kiddos to get tucked into bed at night? What’s your opinion?

Happy Father’s Day To My Dear Sweet Dad
