The Best Way to Color Easter Eggs – Monthly Food Column

It’s fun to color Easter eggs. Pink and yellow and lavender eggs are part of the Easter tradition. And of course, kids love colors and you can now choose from 41 colors.

In this article, you’ll learn the best way to color eggs plus how to boil an egg and avoid the green on the yolk

How to Dye Easter Eggs

1 Choose fresh eggs free from cracks.

2 Commercial egg producers coat their eggs with an oil to help seal them. Wash the eggs in a mild detergent to remove the oil and to let the color adhere more readily to the eggs.

3 Boil the eggs to the “hard boil” stage.

4 To one cup of hot water, add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar, and the desired food coloring or dye. Be sure to get enough food coloring in the water to make it a darker shade than the desired shade for the eggs.

5 Dip the eggs in the colored solution until the desired shade is reached. For darker shades, let the eggs sit in the dye for up to two hours.

6 If the eggs are to be eaten, keep them refrigerated.

Use professional food color gels from Americolor, or equal. Professional gels are not expensive, they are nine times more concentrated so it takes a lot less, and the colors are brighter and prettier. Gels just make prettier eggs.

Tip for blown eggs

If you are going to use blown eggs for Easter (those with the egg blown out through a hole in the end of the shell), color the eggs before blowing. If you blow the egg from the shell before dying, the empty, fragile shells will be difficult to immerse and handle in the dying water.

How to Boil an Egg so that is Perfectly Cooked

PPeggtimer

Would you like to avoid that green coating on the yolks of your hardboiled eggs? You can do so if you time your cooking carefully. It’s a matter of temperature. Always use an egg timer.

1. Use only clean, fresh eggs. Discard eggs that are cracked.

2. Lay the eggs in a heavy saucepan, one layer deep.

3. Cover them with cold water just to cover the eggs.

4. Bring the water in the pan to a rapid boil.

5. Remove the pan from the heat, cover it with a lid, and let the eggs stand in the hot water for 14 minutes.

6. Remove the eggs from the pan and place them in ice water until they are cool enough to handle.

Colored egg timers are pretty amazing. There is a built in gauge that tells you how hard boiled your egg is. It takes the guess work out.

Overcoming Cancer as a New Mother

cancersurvivor2

I was delighted to get this email. Heather reached out to me and wanted to share her story about surviving cancer.

Heartwarming Story!

Most 7-year-olds don’t know what cancer is, but my daughter is very familiar with the term. Not only does she know what cancer is and how frightening it can be, but she knows that there is always hope. When asked about this deadly disease, she will tell you that she saved my life. She’s not trying to be cute, she just clearly understands the effect that she has had on me and how hard I fought so I could be with her.

heatherdaughter

While our friends were starting their families, my husband and I were still focusing on getting to know each other. Our lives felt complete as they were, and we saw no reason to rush into parenthood. I was 35 when Cameron and I decided that we were ready for this incredible step, and we had no idea how fast the process would be.

It only took us three months to conceive Lily, and I took three pregnancy tests before I really believed the news. I was so excited about all the changes we were facing. I was shocked and nervous, but I was also incredibly excited and happy about becoming a mother. I spent so much time rubbing my belly and thinking about the baby growing inside me. I wondered what kind of mother I would be, and I knew that I would do everything in my power to be a great mother to our child.

Pregnancy agreed with me, and the nine months passed without any serious problems. I could have had ten more children because Lily was so easy for me. My only problem appeared as I was preparing to deliver her. My little darling was breech, and the doctors were unable to turn her. I was whisked in for an emergency C-section. While other women may have panicked at this, I turned it into a positive by joking that her head would be perfectly round. When she was born, I was overcome with so many emotions. There was so much I wanted to teach her, show her and tell her.

All I could do was hold her in my arms, staring at her perfect little features and thinking about how incredibly blessed I was. I could have held her that way forever, but things always change and time stops for no one.
Lily was only 3 ½-months-old when I went to the doctor and received news that would change all of our lives. Thank God my husband was with me, because I didn’t know what to do when the doctor said I had malignant pleural mesothelioma.

When he started saying I only had 15 months to live, I began to shut down. All I could think of was that I wouldn’t be there for Lily. I had barely gotten to know her, and I would never get to see her grow into the beautiful woman of my dreams. Thankfully, my husband was there and he continued to listen even as I started to drift in my shock and grief. He collected the information the doctor gave us, and he made the decisions about my medical care.

They weren’t easy decisions to make because they involved traveling and some extreme surgeries. However, they were my best hope for surviving. It would start by going to Boston to meet with one of the top mesothelioma specialists in the world. I would undergo surgery to remove the infected organs including my left lung, the lining of my heart and even my diaphragm.

I would remain in the hospital for 18 days to stabilize me and help me start recovering. After that, I would live in an outpatient facility near the hospital for two more weeks. During this time, my daughter would be away from me. She would be living with my parents in South Dakota while I underwent the treatments and Cameron tried to continue working and supporting me. Finally, after two months apart, I would join her at my parent’s house before returning to Minnesota to start my radiation and chemotherapy treatments.

This was a major sacrifice for Cameron and I, but it was necessary. I missed an entire month of her life, but it meant that I would be around for her in the years to come. I hated being apart from her, but I made the sacrifice so that I could be here for her today. I fought to live for my daughter, and I cannot thank her enough for giving me the strength and courage to fight.

heatherfamily

I look back on my journey with this disease, and I know that I am blessed to be alive. With mortality rates of almost 95 percent, the odds of survival were not in my favor. However, I had something that other people don’t have. I had a baby girl at home who needed her mother, and I absolutely credit her with saving my life.

The Contents of the Checklist for the Forthcoming Spring Cleaning

Spring Cleaning

People who are getting ready for the most important cleaning project in the year, spring cleaning, are not only happy that the weather is becoming warmer and friendlier, the trees are bursting out in green foliage, and the birds are chirping to welcome the balmy season. They are also getting ready for the spring cleaning, and they are at a loss where to start, in what order to approach the cleaning activities, and where to shop for cleaners. However, the most important thing is that good mood and spring cleaning go hand by hand because the regeneration spring energies flow to the blood with positive vibes.

Preparing a checklist for the forthcoming spring cleaning and decluttering can relieve all the above-mentioned difficulties. Planning always introduces order into activities, and a checklist is the result of planning. Making up a spring cleaning checklist will ensure that all the activities that need to be done will be really implemented, no important cleaning stage will be skipped for lack of time or lack of attention.

The checklist for the spring cleaning should be drawn up by room. That will ensure that no corner or nook is forgotten during that “mission impossible.” The tools and supplies which are needed for the cleaning of the different surfaces should also be included in the checklist. The greatest attention should be devoted to the seasonal chores that are typically carried out during that season, so these chores should be in the beginning of the checklist. The corners and surfaces that have recently been cleaned should be left out of the checklist, and that stage of planning can leave substantial time for other areas of the home where the efforts should be made.

Typically a spring cleaning checklist should include the following: the first area to be cleaned is the kitchen. The kitchen is the area where the most frequent cleaning takes place, and because it is a room where the food is stored and prepared, it should be the first room to enjoy the benefits of thorough spring cleaning. The pantries, drawers, cabinets should be emptied and cleaned carefully. Now is the perfect time to pitch all the useless appliances, utensils or expired food.

The bathroom is another place where the cleaning efforts should be devoted in the beginning of the cleaning. The accumulation of limescale is difficult to cope with, especially in areas where the water is especially hard, but the result of the efforts – a sparkling clean bathroom, is worth the hard work. Do not miss to organize the laundry room – you can buy a new basket for the dirty clothes that fit better the interior or just arrange the detergents and take care of the washing machine and dryer.

Spring is a great time for a new beginning. So why don’t you arrange a cozy, trendy drop zone in the hall? Think of a colourful, functional solution that will change the look of the house.

The next rooms to be cleaned as part of the spring renovation of the home are the living areas. The living room is the third biggest culprit for the accumulation of dust and dirt in the home as it is there that people spend a lot of time, communicating with the other family members, watching TV, reading magazines, etc. If you have an office area, pay special attention to it; as it’s the ideal time to put an end to the chaos and to organize your desk. Why don’t you add another drop zone for all the papers and fresh flowers that will inspire you.

The bedroom is the next item on the spring cleaning checklist, and although the efforts on cleaning will be typically smaller, it should find its right place on the list. That is mainly because typically the closets are located there. Spring is an ideal time to do away with all the unnecessary clothes, books and all the rest you have stored. You can organize a small backyard sale or surprise your friend with little presents. In the kid’s room pay also attention to all the toys- you can throw some of them away or donate them to kids in need.

The cellar and the garage are the next, most often the last, items to be included in the spring cleaning checklist. Not only cleaning these rooms, but also getting rid of clutter and organizing the contents there, should be planned by including these areas in the spring cleaning activities.

The plan is ready, so it is time for action. Try to enjoy that process and to engage the whole family in it – that way you will have fun and soon enough will enjoy a brand new clutter-free and fresh house.

Thank You, Lord for loving me so completely.

O Jesus, the Friend of the little children, bless and protect all the children of the world.

God in heaven, hear my prayer, keep me in Thy loving care. Be my guide in all I do, Bless all those who love me too.

Dear Lord, thank You for forgiving me of my sins and giving me eternal life.

Dear Lord, I pray today that You help me to control my thoughts. Help me to not think any evil towards anyone or anything.

Amen… 🙂

From The Bible

Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith.

1 Thessalonians 3:10

As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

John 15:9-11

Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.

Mark 14:38

Prayer Quotes

(From http://www.searchquotes.com/)

He who interrupts the course of his spiritual exercises and prayer is like a man who allows a bird to escape from his hand; he can hardly catch it again. ~~ St John Of The Cross

Anyone who is to find Christ must first find the church. How could anyone know where Christ is and what faith is in him unless he knew where his believers are? ~~ Martin Luther

Organizing Your Decoration for Celebrations

Celebration

In order to have a really proper celebration with an appropriately celebrative mood you have to certainly make sure that you are going to use plenty of toys, decorations and beautiful breath-taking imagery in order to create this one celebration into a memorable experience of beauty and charm that will be remembered by your guests for a long time and that will become the reason most likely for their return next year. What you have to do when we are talking about celebrations and decorations is first hit the proper style of the individual celebration. If for instance we are talking about Easter you will need one type of decoration but if we happen to talk about Christmas then the type of decoration becomes something entirely different.

First of all, you need to know the right type of decoration for the specific celebration and the specific season. For example there are numerous styles of decorations that are typical for the four different seasons. Spring usually means brighter colors, summer is all about fresh flowers and plants, autumn is about darker colors and winter is naturally about every possible toy, star, shining decoration imaginable. Then there are some typical decorations for different individual celebrations. If we are talking about Christmas it is the Christmas tree decorations-blue, red, golden, green sparkly balls, golden stars, Father Christmas figures, etc. If we are talking about Halloween we will have to consider pumpkins and scary masks or any other sort of scary decorations that put you in the mood of the day. You have to take into account both the season and the day and the specific occasion of the celebration and dress your living place with the appropriate decorations.

When you are handling the specific decorations you need to remember that more importantly than everything else you have to make sure that comfort is no greater than beauty and vice versa. The one is not more important than the other during celebrations. Comfort is all about your guests feeling well and beauty is about enhancing and spellbinding the guests. So in a way instead of facing each other off comfort and beauty need to work together and to make each other better and stronger. If for instance you are placing a gigantic flower composition you should simply place it through the ground to make the floor look more fanciful or different because for instance the guests will trip. Better put it on the floor but in a straight line so that both the composition to be more distinctive and the feeling of order to be well preserved as a whole as well. Finally, don’t forget to keep your decorations perfectly clean and in good shape all the time.
